On July 15, 2011 LeBasse Projects will unveil the first major solo exhibition from Australian artist Melissa Haslam. Haslam, who has shown in group shows throughout the United States, will share paintings exploring her fascination with the Kigurumi seen. Participants in Kigurumi fashion themselves as living stuffed animals, wearing what they call “disguised pajamas.” Haslam, employing oil, presents young women dressed in full costume with great delicacy and an intimacy that proves her interest in the subculture includes some reverence as well.

Damien Hirst x Supreme Re-release

Damien Hirst will be releasing the Supreme skateboard decks, that he produced with the New York brand in 2009, at his Other Criteria store in London. For the occasion the artist customized 40 decks, adding his original signature and some drawings to each deck.

The decks will be available in store from Tuesday, July 12th and a limited amount will be made available online from July 14th, 10am.

Memorial Day Weekend is also known as "Urban Beach Weekend" on Miami Beach. It was cool in the late 90s and early 2000s but for the last 5 or 6 years it has been a shit show. So, I get the fuck up out of dodge this time every year. This year I took a trip to Orlando to meet up with a couple of my business partners one of which was managing a band that was playing at the Electric Daisy Carnival. My partner Mike was able to hook it up with some all access passes the night we arrived.

There is nothing like 40,000 kids on drugs to make you feel like an old fart. The average age must have been 16 for that event and everyone looked like they were rollin' rollin' rollin'.... But we still managed to have a good time and I did get to feed on the souls of some of the youth. Eventually, I gave in and got on their level. Don't judge me.

So after the EDC we went to BBQ Bar and I-Spy to grab a drink before calling it kind of early. Yes, we are old and we were tired, plus we planned on painting freights the next morning so we called it a night after only one drink at the bars.

The next morning we woke up and did one of my favorite things in the world, paint trains. We hit this day time spot and knocked out a couple of quickies. While walking down the tracks I saw this old Crook freight that had to be at least 6 or 7 years old.

After a quick freight session, we went to do some BBQin' over at our homie Dolla's place. I mean what's Memorial Day Weekend without at least a little bit of grilling?! Dolla hooked up some of his not so world famous but incredibly awesome chicken. It was so good that I wanted to smack my Mama but she wasn't around so I smacked some random old lady I seen on the street cause I figured she was someones Mama.

After painting freights, BBQing and drinking beer all day we were pooped so we went back to the house and chilled for the rest of the night...

The next morning I linked up with my buddy Bryan and we decided to go on a kayaking adventure in the St. John's River.

The weather said there was only a 10% chance of rain, but what the fuck do the weather reporters know cause we got caught in 5 different storms. We kind of seen them coming but by then it was too late to turn around.

What we didn't know then and what we know now, is that the stretch of river we were kayaking was one of the most alligator infested waters in the world!

There were literally 13-14ft gators everywhere! It was pretty intense cause my kayak was only 6ft in length. And the whole notion that the gators were more scared of us them we were of them was complete bullshit! These dudes did not seem please that we were in their territory.

On the river, the only other vessels was charter airboats who took loads of tourists to see alligators in their habitat. They almost capsized us every time they passed by us. I heard one of the airboat operators tell his passengers to look at the crazy kayakers, and how insane we were for kayaking these waters...but I think he was just trying to give them more content to bring home to what ever craphole in the midwest they came from.

So after weathering 5 rainstorms with torrential downpour, navigating 10 miles through giant alligator infested waters, and almost getting capsized (in giant alligator infested waters), we got back to shore and was immediately harassed by these assholes who issued us $90 tickets for not having life vests on our kayaks.... The water never got more than 4ft deep by-the-way.

All in all I had a great weekend and lived to tell the story.... However, I would return to Miami and receive the worst news I got in years...

Prohibition has always been a historic interest of mine. I find the hypocrisy of society and the those who take advantage of it, very interesting. Yesterday I took a day off from the gallery to do some free-diving, fishing, and all around salt life exploring with some good buddies of mine.

We first visited a shipwreck right of the shores of South Beach called "Half Moon". Half Moon was the name of a ship that was anchored of the coast of Miami during prohibition times as a drinking and gambling saloon. The Half Moon capsized and ran a ground in the 60's and began to sink. Today, a perfect skeleton remains of the ship covered in coral. This would be the first stop in the days adventure, next stop Stiltsville.

Stiltsville is located about a mile off the South end of Key Biscayne. It was literally a town, a mile off the coast of Miami in the middle of the Bay which is only accessible by boat. At its prime, it was said to have 20 houses or structures but after decades of Hurricanes and government intervention, Stiltsville now only has 5 or 6 remaining structures standing. Stiltsville is now owned by the government and is protected as a historical site. Stiltsville was rumored to be the creation of Al Capone, who developed the area after he could no longer have casinos and brothels with in Miami city limits. So Al Capone built a small town 1 mile off the coast of Miami, which was no longer with in the city limits and out of the jurisdiction of law enforcement, to cater to the immense demand for alcohol consumption and prostitution. Stiltsville was home to some legendary social clubs including The Quaterdeck Club and the Calvert Club.

I feel that we are very close to the political climate that existed during the prohibition era. More and more of our freedoms are being taken from us by those who denounce certain elements in public while indulging in those same elements in private (Tea Partiers/ Tea Baggers). This is the same sentiment that I find interesting in the government acceptance, realization, and protection of things once considered a societal faux pas.

No matter what your political view are, Stiltsville is a must see in Miami and a unique part of Miami's history and culture.

One of my favorate piece that happened for Primary Flight this year was Jim Darling's found object sculpture in the Kohn Compound. Hox, Jim and his crew went dumpster diving for 2 days in the streets of Miami to find the objects including a stolen speed boat to produce this amazing sculpture.

So I've been off this blog for about a month now. Not because I gave up on it but because I was just so busy this last month. Ok so I was made a partner in Primary Flight which meant that I had to get these dudes organized which was no easy task. This year Primary Flight was bigger than it had ever been with twice as many artists and murals as the 3 previous years combined. On top of that we launched our new permanent gallery and offices called Primary Projects in the Design District with a solo show by the homie RETNA. We also had the Shore Club rented out for a week as well as curating and re-branding the Graffiti Gone Global show and helping New Image Art with their show at Cafeina. Not to mention the 65+ murals we were curating and all the parties we threw both at the Shore Club on South Beach and Cafeina in Wynwood simultaneously all week. It was one chaotic week, to say the least but it's over now and we're already starting to plan for Basel 2011. This coming year is going to be a break through year for Primary Projects. Just wait to see what we've got planned.

Hell's Half Acre

For the 2010 Frieze Art Fair, Steve Lazarides (the man who made Banksy a household name) has created visions of hell in the tunnels underneath Waterloo station.

Earlier this year Lazarides issued 15 of his protégés with a copy of Dante’s Inferno and the promise of a darkened nook somewhere in the maze of railway tunnels running underneath Waterloo. The resulting installation, Hell’s Half Acre, will run for one week only, a mildewed alternative to the air-conditioned marquees full of high-rollers in Regent’s Park. “It’s certainly going to be something different from Frieze,” says Lazarides, looking thoughtfully at a menacing shop dummy wearing a gas mask. “The only reason I didn’t do it last year was because I felt it was the wrong time to be poking fun at the art fairs. It was pretty grim. This year I thought, it’s time to play again.
